Level 1 allows your child to focus on building their short and long vowel knowledge whilst developing their word decoding skills.
The level is made up of 19 lessons designed to build a strong foundation in reading words with short and long vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u).
The first 5 lessons concentrate on the short vowels only (a, e, i, o, u). The remaining lessons cover vowels a, e ,i, o, u by firstly revising the letter’s short vowel sound before introducing its long vowel sound.
Your child will learn their first visual codes within this level. Short tutorials at the beginning of each lesson give your child the opportunity to learn and also revise new visual codes and letter sounds that will appear in the lessons. A short explanation on each page has been provided so you’ll know exactly what to say to walk your child through this part of the lesson.

Children who struggle with learning to read often need repeated exposure to the same letter sound patterns over a longer period of time before they are able to fully grasp these essential elements of reading.
Each lesson focuses on a single vowel sound only. Repetition of a single vowel sound carried throughout a session, helps the student consolidate the learning and reduces the load on the working memory.
Short bursts of repeated sound patterns within a lesson, practised over consecutive days, make it easier for the learner to grasp information, and ultimately, process it to their long-term memory.
The visual code becomes the identifying mark that allows the learner to ‘activate’ the letters with ease and confidence. Transforming the very abstract nature of learning to read into a more trusted and concrete experience for the learner.
Each lesson offers a similar pattern of learning and providing a familiar style and layout.
